Thousands join Olympic hero for first VitalityMove

Around 3,000 people joined Vitality Ambassador Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and legendary DJ Trevor Nelson yesterday for the first VitalityMove running festival at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.

Movers of all ages and abilities took on one mile, 5k and 10k routes as part of Jessica’s initiative to inspire thousands of people to lead a more active lifestyle. Each person who crossed the finish line got to immediately celebrate on stage with Nelson, who performed live for runners and spectators.

Jessica, who is currently expecting her second child, was joined by her family to test out the Disney Music Mile, one of four musical themes for the course ranging from festival classics in ‘Battle of the Bands’ to the latest tunes in ‘Hot Hits’.

Speaking at VitalityMove Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill said: “It’s been a really lovely day and I had a lot of fun with my family.  It was really good to see so many people having a good time whilst being active in groups and as families. I managed to meet lots of the runners and many had amazing reasons to be taking part - it was inspiring to see. I very much hope that we can organise more events like this to provide fun opportunities for people to be active."

The more testing 5k and 10k courses took in stunning views of Chatsworth House and the beautiful Peak District landscape. Between running challenges visitors could try their hand at other activities such as hockey, netball and segway riding in the Sports Zone. Title partner Vitality also gave everybody the chance to grab a memento in their special photo booth.

Neville Koopowitz, CEO of Vitality, said: “We are delighted with today’s event and would like to thank Jessica for her continued support. VitalityMove is a great opportunity for people to not only have a fun day out but a healthy day out. Our research found that exercising 150 minutes a week can improve life expectancy by more than three years. That’s why we want to encourage people to take regular small steps to a healthier life, a vision also shared by Jessica. We look forward to future events with her.”

The event was raising funds for Diabetes UK to provide support  to the 3.6 million people that have been diagnosed with diabetes and to educate the 11.9 million people who are at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes of the dangers and prevention measures available to them. One of the most heart-warming moments of the day came when three-year-old Ava Wood, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in March this year, joined her family to run the Disney Music Mile alongside Dame Jessica and her son.

After a successful debut Jessica will be looking to hold further VitalityMove events in 2018. To register your interest in taking part head to the official website - vitalitymove.co.uk
